I have a 71 chevy 350 I have had a starter flywheel problem since day 1 when iyou go to start it grinds Like its not matching up or hitting one another correctly have tried both types of flywheels one with more teeth and less teeth had stub nose and long starter can't get anything to work. HELP!!!!

The majority has the 168 tooth flywheel. Sometimes you have to lil buddy the starter by shimming one side to get it to hush up and mesh correctly.

i had one like that and it was because there was a hairline crack in one of the holes for the starter bolts. try using small washers to shim one side until it works perfectly and you will know which side is bad

had a sbc that did the same thing to a T. found rear main bearing spun. crankshaft was moving ever so slightly (wabbling in block) or crankshaft lost its tolerance and not centered. If we spun the engine by hand about 1/2 a turn the starter would grab perfect. next time we tried to start engine...GRIND!!! several starters and flywheels later we dug a bit deeper and found the problem. It was in a 30 ft Profile (go fast boat) with twin small blocks. lotta work pulling those babies out.

71 350 had there own starter you have to get one for a 71 same goes for the flywheel. had this happen to me in a 71 imp. napa was giving me radome starters went through 4 of them B 4 they figured it out. glad i only paid 4 one!!!
