YES AND NO... THEY ARE AROUND 3/8TH OF AN INCH SHORTER THAN STANDARD 12 BOLT 31 SPLINE AXLES AND USE A DIFFERENT BEARING AND RETAINER PLATE... THEY COULD BE USED IF YOU HAVE THE TUBE ENDS TO WELD ONTO A NEW HOUSING. ON THE BRIGHT SIDE, YOU HAVE TWO GREAT LOOKING PAPERWEIGHTS....

Hello. fordshakethis1, yes, you can post, as long as I can correct you. Your short answer is correct, no, they are not the same. The reason is wrong. I have seen both 28 and 31 spline in both of the Ford cars. So, the splines COULD be the same. The lengths are different. But hey, 28 and 31 are so close, essentially the same? They are both made by FOMOCO. Yes, I know. I am a ............ Also, one housing is a leaf spring (up to 1969), one housing is a coil spring (1970 and newer).
stuntmanken; the Dana you have, I will write, is worse. The Dana housing is fine, the shafts are still bad. What is worse, you will need to find spare axle shafts. Can be hard to do with the "older" Danas. Also, the pinion shaft could also be a "coarse" spline. Meaning you are stuck with the yoke that is on the pinion now. The coarse pinion Dana, and coarse pinion (Nerat reproduction) 8 3/4" ARE different. The Dana 60 housing you have could be a place to start a "build" though. David Bryan

Hello. So much hate. Since you have only pulled so few of these housings apart, it is possible you only found the 28 spline. And then assume they only came in 28 spline. That is fine, if that is what you post, assume. All I wrote was, I have seen both. I have seen both. Years and years and years..ago. You may also write that they only came with a round yoke, but no, I have seen them with no round yoke. Very interesting. David Bryan

I just wanna see it , and possibly understand a rhyme or reason of why his are 31's , but all I have seen are 28's.. If you know so much about ford and there processes you should already know that there is absolutely no rhyme or reason for what and how they do things!! Nothing routine bout Ford. FORD IS DUMB IT WILL DRIVE YOU INSANE AND MAKE YOU ARGUE ABOUT THE SAME THING FOR HRS AND GET NOWHERE.

I have twice the Ford's as I do Chevy that was spoken from experience your the one that wants to argue and 99% of the stuff Dave knows about is from personal experience. So stop arguing and start absorbing timeless wisdom from Dave.

Hello. I have seen both, in both years cars. I guess I did not know Moser HAD part numbers for axle shafts for these cars. I may look. One thing though, I actually had to look this up because it rang a bell some where in my head. I did not think there was a Mustang, Boss 429 in 1969. I had to look, and am pretty sure the 429 did not come out until 1970. In 1969 it would have been the 428. It really does not matter though. 61J is essentially correct, there seems to be no rhyme or reason FOMOCO did what they did. David Bryan

Hello. You mean the paper I was reading was wrong, no. Could it be?......
Of coarse there was a Boss 429 in 1969!
Check mate back at ya. And, by the way, you would loose at chess as well.
More questions, any one? David Bryan

If I said the world was round would you say it's square just to argue? Seriously...let it go. This started out as a great informative thread and you've single-handedly turned it into 6 pages of arguing. Make a thread saying they know nothing and Im an a hole and leave this one alone...I'm tired of having to scroll through 20 posts to find one good one.

ILL THROW MY KNOWLEDGE OUT THERE FOR YOU ALL. I HAVE WORKED IN MANY SALVAGE YARDS STARTING IN 1985, UP UNTIL 2 YEARS AGO. I CANNOT COUNT THE NUMBER OF LINCOLNS, FORDS AND MERCURY CARS I HAVE TORN APART, AND SEEN COME IN IN PIECES. I DO KNOW FOR AN ABSOLUTE FACT, THAT I HAVE SEEN 1974 LINCOLNS WITH 31 SPLINE AXLES, AND NO, IT WAS NOT JUST ONE AS WE HAD BUYERS FOR THE CENTER SECTION FROM KENTUCKY THAT WOULD BUY THEM BUY THE TRUCKLOAD. I KNOW THAT MERC MARQUIS` AND FORD LTD`S OF THE SAME VINTAGE COULD HAVE A NINE INCH, OR A NON-NINE INCH REAR, DEPENDING ON WHAT ENGINE THEY WERE EQUIPPED WITH. THE 400 AND SMALLER ENGINE CARS GOT THE NON-NINE INCH, AND THE 460 POWERED ONES GOT THE 9... THESE ARE ALL FACTS.....

Hello. IF your Ford has disc brakes, there is more work than just nine nuts. Your move....or just let it go. David Bryan
