Im running my first Ford engine. It is a 352 completely stock. I plan on making headers. What are the pros and cons of this engine and what are some tips for keeping it cool and hopefully not shutting off after every hit. Im a newbie so any and all answers would be appreciated thanks. Also money is tight so ill be fabricating all the parts myself so im not planning on buying DP protectors, cradles, or pulley protectors. If its a must have Ill make it myself. If its not a must have Ill give er heck and hope for the best and have fun while im doing it

Shutting off after hits is a result of high float level in carb, Idle adjustments and timing This engine will get hot.not sure how it compares to a 390 but its the same block.390 runs great when hot though.Hotter they run the better they run.

Thanks what about motor oil what kind and weight would you suggest? Also is it necessary to build something to protect the oil filter? Any tips on that?

never had an oil filter break on these engines.I've never run a 352 in a derby. What kind of car you running? If you can make the car run for a long time I suggest a heavy weight oil or synthetic. It's all about tuning the engine My dry block 390 would run for 30 mins atleast.

They are oil slingin s.o.b's. The FE series engines (352,390,etc) will typically leak oil between the intake and the heads. Also, the valves towards the rear of the heads (firewall end) are know n to burn up due to poor head design regarding the cooling jackets in the heads. Some engines may have the hollow stemmed valves that will last a little longer than previous designed valves. (if ya take them out and shake them up and down, you can hear a slight rattling sound coming from the valve stem). The rope rear main seals can leak pretty easily also. I have owned and ran a few of these in the past. Make decent power, but heat up too fast for me and all the oil leakage turned me away from them.
