Pretty sure Ryan has this site all backed up. I dont care for derbythis.com I think you guys should merge with us come over here and shut yours down. Thats basically what you are telling us to do. I just wanted to try and clear things up. I know suddenlaunch had no way of backing up data for a forum owner short of requesting it from the suddenlaunch owner. Proboards may have that option but here is where the difference comes from. Without a whole lot of data manipulation if there is a backup it can only be restored to proboards. What happens if it goes down like suddenlaunch and is down for 4 months. You can't easily have it back up and going on another forum software. With derbythis.com being on phpBB I can have the forum back up and running within 24 hours and this is if I have to change web servers. phpBB is supported on most linux based webhosting companies so it is not as much of an issue as there is more than one place it can be restored to. Second proboards makes no guarantees of service. If they decide tomorrow they do not want this forum here they can delete it without notice or any repercussions. With derbythis.com it is paid for with a guarantee of service. Without my consent they cannot do anything to the forum unless something is deemed as illegal. Third we may not have as many members but we average 10 posts per registered user as opposed to 4 posts per user on this site. Wecrash can brag the fact they had over 90,000 registered members. My thought is what difference does this make if I only have 350 people actively posting. Fourth there is some control over what happens with the forum. The users requested a LIKE button and we have it. There have been some other requests that have also been incorporated. When is this site going to have a like button? I guess you can continue on with the Karma thing that everyone hated. The capability to manipulate this into what the users want is not as easy to do. What I want to do is compare derbythis.com to the new wecrash. As was said in another post we took the benefits from moving the forum off of a free hosting board but we made it easy to use and kept the forum as a forum. Lastly we are not going away and if/when this site crashes you are all more than welcome to join us over at derbythis.com. I have no problem with this site but I like to live my life by the following quote: "Those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it." It was only a little over 6 months ago we had the suddenlaunch crash. I am here to tell you that any site can crash. The difference comes in how quickly a website can be back up and running. I am telling you with derbythis.com I can have it back up within 24 hours with the maximum loss of 1 week of data. This site can only be back up as quickly as proboards decides to get it back up and running. There a program for it, Its every post saved known to man its not pro broads backup system its a custom program that copy's the forums, Yes it requires a little work to put back on a site and over 40gigs of space but well worth it  Unless my pc burns in a house fire well its gonna be backed up Doesn't take much to even host a linux server in your house with a couple of 2TB hardrives you can have the same effect as any site for backup wise, Now to the part,We started our forums with no hate involved "I" or Casey or most of the uppers people here didn't go posting the site link on every thread and have 3 people posting it in the same thread due with all respect lets keep links in the proper section and keep the tech talk and opinions of wesmash guided here We simply started out on Facebook and lots of the Indiana derby nation helped this site grow i hope this helps grow your site you can never have to many lets keep the forums to what its here for and not post everywhere We don't mind if you post your forum name in your sig. or change your name to it were keeping it friendly here and i hope you respect that |

I would be very careful about that as I have read in many places proboards will delete a site that is being crawled. You may be fine now but if it grows into what you hope it does they will catch it in the IDS as an attack and shut down the site. That is what I find interesting in their user agreement is they tell you that you are responsible for your own backup but then do not give you the tools to do it and the only other way to do it is against their user agreement. Below is what is in the user agreement about crawlers. I have no hate towards you or anyone associated with this forum if you are inferring that. My main point is this was the reason wecrash left proboards. The idea behind it is not about money even though the new site appears to be about money. What they left with was not a good solution. As was posted on another thread of this site if wecrash had went to something like a phpBB site this would probably not even be here. I just am trying to look out for what I feel is best for the derby community which in my opinion is not another free forum. I don't care where everyone ends up. I would like to see many of the break off forums merge as I feel that is in the best interest of the derby community. I however feel that using a free hosting service is not the way to do it and I have been asked to shut down the derbythis forum and move here. I have tried to work with Casey since this forum was at 30 members and i guess he feels he doesn't want to even respond to a pm. I would love to merge the sites but I am not willing to merge to a free hosted forum software. If you were to move this to a phpBB or similar forum I would probably agree to shut down derbythis or if you want to move there I am willing to work out the details. HHH if you live off terms of service your in the wrong sport Take for example Even tho there is a law for not being able to pirate programs and such i see many sites that stay up even tho there going against the law for illegal use Its one of tho's things do you build your car to the rules or do you do extra? in the derby world cause i believe you sign your name on a similar peace of paper And as for the shut down thing, You basically asked up to shut down and go to what you have,If you know how to manage a forum they last for years trust me im on a pro broad forums that been up since 2009 with 10k members, Were not wecrash we will take issue into our hands. As for PHP websites there to easily to be hacked by just anyone who comes therw and wanna take the site into there hands and use it. |
