I'm one of the few who still prefer to build and drive old iron cars. I am fully aware of how tough the new style Fords are when built right, but I am wondering what all of you would take to a big money show assuming that the cars were built to the exact same rules.
I am taking 03 and newer out of the mix on this because when you are done building an 03 and newer you have a Frankenstein car that really isn't anywhere near what it was when it rolled off the factory assembly line. I am also taking Imperials out of this equation.
I'm assuming DI type rules, but anything that you can modify on the Fords you can modify on the old iron. If you can cut and re-weld crush boxes on the Fords, you can cut and re-weld crush boxes on the old iron. If you can swap suspension components on the new iron you can swap or modify suspension components on the old iron. If you can hump plate the new iron then you can hump plate the old iron. Etc., etc.
My point is that the new iron is very tough when the rules are catered towards them, but if you apply the exact same rules to the old iron then what is the best car? I'd say old iron, but I'd be interested in hearing your opinions.

i would take a 74 coupe deville the new styles move fast and can hang right in there with the old iron but with the old iron you start with a lot more from the git go pound for pound the new styles are harder though

With equal rules, the new iron seems to outrun/maneuver the old cars.New iron may run out of rear faster but can zip around and eventually break something on the old iron. This really seemed to be the case at Blizzard and a few other shows I've seen lately.Big,new iron shows are turning into cookie cutter/$$ set-up snooze fests.IMO.

I would take a Clean old-style if I didnt have a really clean old-style I would run an 98-02 Vic and Nose with it...
My feelings are it comes down to the builder, I tend to over-engineer everything I build...

a set of rules you describe do exist at brookville pa derby. but imperials do run. so far 2 caddys 1 chevy wagon 1 bubble vic 1 subframe imperial and 1 fullframe imperial have won so far..this yr they improved the rules alittle more and allow leaf conversions now.

around me ive only seen one new iron car run more than one run and be a contender. we still run alot of old iron around me and 80s cars do not get to do anything different to their cars.

IMO if certain promoters rules didn't cater to the 80' and newer ford products alot of people would still be building old iron.
When you can tilt the front of a ford,or replace the stock aluminum cradle, use gas tank protectors, distributor protectors or add leaf springs to a coil car it makes a newer ford extremely strong. If you had rules where the newer ford must remain stock alot less people would bring them to a demolition derby.
I prefer to build and drive old iron,we have ran a few 80' and newer cars also.I personally think 80' and newer derbys are boring, who wants to see 99% of the same make of cars driving around? The fans want to see variety of cars...IMO
