Let's get it started.
There just like a small block chevy with two cyls missing.
You can use a V-8 distributer with a 6cyl HEI cap.Sounds like it wouldn't work but it does. There was a bunch of info and pics on the old site, anyone still have any?

Why did you say keep em cool widefrikenopen? If there just like a sbc then they should be fine if they get hot.

They sre similiar to a small block chevy however nt the same a 4.3 is a even fire motor the rod journal size is different block cannot be bored more the 40 over or atleast I wouldn't recommend it but when these motor get hot they start going south in a hurry lack of power hard starting short derbies this motors are the way to go real long runs the 2.3 hass the advantage...atleast for now until I get these 4.3s figured out and bulletproof

Started working on mine today,if you grind out the TBI intake and redrill the bolt holes you can bolt on a rochester 2bbl.

It really didn't take long to fit up the carb, the intake was aluminum.

zero lash then 1/2turn, just like a sbc, 650 will work but you will prob need to drop the jetting down.

I will be trying out the distributer soon. From the old site-you just use a v-8 distributer and a 6 cyl hei cap. It doesn't sound like it would work but I guess it does.

Regular Chevy bell. Any transmission that came off of a V8 Chevy, any other 4.3 or 3.8 Chevy, old school iron duke, And pretty sure the straight 6's had it, too.

I guess yours is throttle body? Remove throttle body, set rochester base gasket over the holes where the throttle body was on the intake trace it out with a marker mark the bolt holes. Drill and tap new bolt holes, grind intake with a die grinder until the throttle plates on the carb will open.

I had to modify a straight six bell housing to bolt up a sbc in a driver gmc truck something with how the starter bolted up.

older truck bellhousing had a 3 bolt starter nosecone that bolted the starter to bell instead of block.

GM 3 wire alternator.....twist all 3 together (one of the small ones don't matter, but I never remember which one), run through a toggle, then to + side of battery. I also install a hefty fusible link fairly close to the switch.

stock 4.3, this motor had issues the 1st time I ran it getting hot quick but it was the same setup in a 77 Caddi that was under full throttle beating almost the whole time lol , then sat a year before i threw it in the Chrysler a week before showtime .......at Idle would stay around 195 but when you started opening her up on the track it would jump up pretty quick....ended up chuggin and dieing at about 290 which was less than a 20 minute heat .....truck that it came out of had over 200,000 on it but not sure if the motor was a rebuild because it was alot tighter than any 200,000 Motor ive messed with .....quite possibly the below statement didnt help one bit either lol
one major thing that I think doomed this motor right off the bat was that it was a test motor that I just took out of a truck sitting down back of my dads shop for the whole spring and summer with no hood on it and had no intake on it and water literally filled the whole motor .All I did was threw an intake and carb on, pulled plugs, poured oil in the cylinders, changed oil and put a tune up on it and went with it.......mainly wanted to see if it was something I liked before I did anything else to one and if it could take constant higher RPMs..... and it was a free motor so had nothing into it if it failed

Which ever one you want. Just bring cyl 1 to top dead center, drop in the distributer and line up to a terminal on the cap, that will be number1 follow the firing order around the cap

^^^^^^^^^With those gears, in derby situations, such as being hung up, pushing a front end around with a busted tie rod, flat tires, metal dragging on tires, etc., you'll burn up automatic trannsmissions or stock type clutches on manual trannies. Might get lucky once, or even a few times.....but it WILL happen.
Also, the steeper your gears are, the less noticable your lack of power will be when you start having problems. The higher that ratio number is, the less your engine has to work to do the same job.

A stock 4.3 cap looks just like a V8 cap, with 2 of the little tits plugged with plastic.

The headers are just old SBC cut so there single. The wagon did good wasent allowed to build like I wanted so left rear corner bent a lil weird not bad I had some bigger cars in heat a six Banger Dippy and box Chevy with 3.8 . The 4.3 ran great till roter button exploded.

Hope this helps some of u guys out there. U can get a 4.3 hei distributor off ebay for around 50 bucks plus shipping. And DEC headers make a good set of headers for around 150.00 for them. And to the guys asking about the 3.8 mtr. If anyone had info on them. I ran one for 2 years in about 12 to 15 derbys and had great luck several 1st,2nd,and 3rd place finishes. As far as some things. Such as the heads, intakes and distributors u can change them from a 4.3 to the 3.8 aswell as the cams I found this out on accident. I ordered stuff for a 4.3 I was building and when I got the stuff I realized I had a 3.8 and I called crane cams and they told me the stuff would not work. I checked every thing with calipers and it all was the same as the stock cam out of the 3.8 So I put it together and ran it several times until it finally blew on me at a race that was more like a mud run then a derby. I had to hold it to the floor for a good 20 mins to keep from getting stuck hope this helps some of u guys.

here are a few tips i have found for this motor that will swap over from a 350. cam bearings, main bearings, pistons, valvetrain parts, timing cover, oil pump, and front dress. im grabbing one to power my car hoping i wont have traction issues with my 7.5 stock rear gears welded solid with tractor lugs.

To the guy who asked about gear ratios. I would say go with 4.56s.If u run small tracks it will work perfect. It would be low enough to pick up speed quick but not low enough to rap your mtr out when your going for a full track shot.

you no what ratio you 3speed is i think it would depend on if the tranny was a 0 grove or on up to a 3 or 4 grove i believe, never ran a 3speed but always wanted to but i would base your rear gears off of how you first gear is in your car, lol prolly dont help much

couple questions........just got a 4.3 , someone stuck it in a 80s blazer that originally had a 2.8 so not sure what it originally came out of.....................has black plastic center bolt valve covers stamped vortec, block #s are 4.3 LG from left to right backside of block behind dist...........2sg.........d297.......10066011
intake casting # is 14094011
have been trying to to decode it with little success.......from what ive read it says its a non vortec 87-94 tbi engine with no balance shaft , but does not really give any more info than that ...........and I guess the plastic centerbolt valve covers are throwing me off...............any ideas guys

Hey guys I read through all the building a 4.3 section, and i have a few more questions hopefully i didnt just miss the questions. So a regular v8 disributor will go right in a VORTEC 4.3 also? I know they will work in the tbi engines. Just not sure about the vortecs. Also, I can get a carb 4.3 MARINE vortec intake and carb. Any downside/upside to a marine carb? Thanks

also i have a non vortec 4.3.....would a 350 cfm be big enough? it is a stock engine. Or should I go with a 500 cfm?
Thanks
Let's get it started.
There just like a small block chevy with two cyls missing.
You can use a V-8 distributer with a 6cyl HEI cap.Sounds like it wouldn't work but it does. There was a bunch of info and pics on the old site, anyone still have any?

They sre similiar to a small block chevy however nt the same a 4.3 is a even fire motor the rod journal size is different block cannot be bored more the 40 over or atleast I wouldn't recommend it but when these motor get hot they start going south in a hurry lack of power hard starting short derbies this motors are the way to go real long runs the 2.3 hass the advantage...atleast for now until I get these 4.3s figured out and bulletproof

zero lash then 1/2turn, just like a sbc, 650 will work but you will prob need to drop the jetting down.

4.88 or 5.10 is what I would recommend for gears

here are a few tips i have found for this motor that will swap over from a 350. cam bearings, main bearings, pistons, valvetrain parts, timing cover, oil pump, and front dress. im grabbing one to power my car hoping i wont have traction issues with my 7.5 stock rear gears welded solid with tractor lugs.

Thanks
