3 biggest things I've learned with mine...
Replace the rag joint with a u-joint....they will bend right behing the steering gear & rip that rag right right out. I don't know when or if they switched to rack & pinion. U-joint off an Astro van column has the right splines to mate to the Gremlin box.
Chain the humps. There is a fairly stiff plate under the floor right above the rear axles that works well for it.
If you can do it....weld the lower core support to the frame, or it will rip out.

Replace ball joints and rearends. 70-73 have junk bumpers 74-76 are the years to get, AMC made them in 77-78 but they're smaller.

C4 is right. Definitely replace rag joint. If you're allowed on your 78, I'd see if you're allowed to swap the front bumper shocks out with something bigger. If you notice they are the size of a broom stick in diameter compared to a beer can on the 74-76. Even seen guys take the back straps and shocks off 74-76 GM sedans work real good.

They are completely different animals, but can be built to contend with them.

I have a 74 w a 1 st n 2 nd place on it. The back rolled up and I lost the bumper the first go but welded it back on and the front is bent up now. I will try to put some pics on here. The a arms are the weakest I think.

I don't use anything but the nose with these things. but I don't drive like a genuis either. just aim for tires and your car won't break. With the front suspension welded up you'll be bending/breaking tie rods, A arms, rear ends when you hit people.

use the front bumper. a derby car is like a virgian..work on her for 3 months....the magic night comes....one good hit......ruined. If you dont like to drive hard......then stick with full size. Friends will help you move...real friends will help you move a body.

Yeah, they were all 4x4 with no structural differences. I think he was asking what body style. The SX4 hatch is much like a Spirit, the Kammback is much like a Gremlin or Kammback Spirit. Wagons & sedans (2 and 4 door) are much like newer Hornets or Concords. If it's a wagon or sedan, check your wheelbase. They are109 & change. Hatch back & Kammback are 97ish.

You got a pacer A arm you can snap a pic of? Kind of curious on what the difference is between the two.

I have a complete wheel-to-wheel sub sitting on the ground. I'll snap a pic tomorrow if I remember. That sub has abou 7-8 heats on it.One of the arms bent moderately....was able to put it in a press & bend it right back into shape & it stayed that way.
Gremlins and Eagles use the same a-arms They don't do to bad on Gremlins, but they are placed differently on Eagles because of the 4x4 spindle & front axles. Can't keep a stock a-arm in a Eagle for more than a heat or 2

Sweet appreciate it brother. Been drinking most of the afternoon cause my college team got whooped, and I bought another Gremlin today so all I'm doing is kicking knowledge and boozing.

On top of swapping ball joints, welding A arms for bumper height, I've put a 5/8 in hole thru both upper n lower A arm, put all thread thru n tightened the he'll out of it. Kind of a fail safe for A arm welds plus it gave her a redneck alignment

we've been running soft suspension, even completely eliminating shocks when they break......replacing ball joints with bolts......find wheels with a negative offset so it will still roll with bent arms and repair bent arms as needed

These are of a stock Pacer a-arm. I believe it would take some mods to make it fit in a Gremlin.

Not much to it. Separate ball joint from spindle. Find largest diamater bolt that will fit through spindle hole. Torch matching hole through ball joint. Weld a washer on top (or bottom if it needs to be hidden) of remaining ball joint mount to stiffen it up. Insert bolt. Leave it just loose enough to not loose your range of motion. Install double nut, or lock nut to keep it from falling out.
Much cheaper than new ball joints, same amount of time, and in most cases, more effective.

I am running a stock show, only allow a few mods, anything I can do to make the front of my 1974 gremlin take the pounding from the little fwd cars of today? Also are the fronts strong to use on these? Im told the back of the 74 gremlin is really strong and will hold up but i dont know anything about the fronts and dont want to waste this car

For stock rules, the '74 bumper should be decent. If you can, collapse and either weld or bolt the bumper shocks. Use as many hood bolts a you can. And replace the steering rag joint with a u-joint. There's your minimums.
And just like your fwd competitors, try to protect your wheels. Same with your rear wheels. If you are using the stock rear, the axles are not real great. If you are using the straight 6, ditch the fan for a low profile electric.
The '74 has a stiffer rear than the 73 & older, but if you don't chain the humps, you'll be disappointed.

^^^^^You're talking about the plate that is mounted to the underside of the "trunk" floor? I like to take out the shocks, run the chain right through where the shock was (right thru that plate), then over the frame rail, punch a hole right through the wheel well, & loop it around the axle housing, squash the back of the car down a couple inches and bolt it. Separate chains for left and right.

Local scrap yard has a 76 hornet. The body is rusty but the front bumper is solid. Are these bumpers any good and worth pulling?

Measure the main leaf and tell me how long it is. Then I'll measure the stock leafs I got on the two gremlins I got.

74 & newer is the magic number. If you get the humps chained really good, the older ones will hold for a while, though.
And the better your leaf pack, the better your odds.

Like I said, the damage qwas pretty much done before I chained these. I pulled the car back down to do it, so it could hang together for another run.
Right through the hole where the shock used to be, and punch a hole right through the wheel well above the frame rail. You can see where there is a factory reinforced plate where the shocks were.
If you don't have access to a tractor bucket, or something to push the back of the car down, it will take a series of long bolts to get it sucked down.

pretty sure when my buddy measured it the shackle holes were around 48in apart measuring around the length not a strait line..

If it is a 6 cylinder or V8, it will wire up like a Ford, as they used Ford ignition systems. See the 2.3 Diagram in the thread locator at the top of the compact page. If it is the Audi 2.0 four banger.....don't know what to tell ya.
Welcome aboard.

Most on here disagree. Personally, I love the 258's. Not a fan of the 232.

1. A flat stack has every other leaf in the pack flipped upside down.
2. Check your rules.....most places would say no.
