cut your header panel off and shorten your front up 4 inches and then cut the mouting piece of your bumper shock off and get 2 inch pip shove in your mounting hole and then weld your pipe in then your bracket on.

dont have any pictures on how to do it. its really simpel just cut your header panel at the seam top and bottom and then cut your unibody frame 4 inches back but make sure your fenders are off then weld your header panel back on

ok so i did shorten my car the other night. it wasn't bad i took a bunch of pictures so it can be shown how i did it i shortened mine 5 inches
so i cut the whole core support off
[image]
then i measured back 4 inches and marked that but also marked 2 inches also so that i could cut it off at 2 inches and the inside out a 4 inches so that the core support would slide inside the frame
[image]
then you cut the same angle all the way to the top of the dog house
[image]
then slide the core support back on and test fit it
[image]
and if you like it there weld it and it should look like this
[image]
also you can cut a little around the light whole on the core support when you get it welded back on to make a flap to weld down the inside of the dog house for extra support
it was my first time doing this. took about 3 hours cause i never done it before now i think i could do it in about half the time. my fenders are actually perfectly in line with the core support now.

I tried and failed. The center sump oil pan on the 3.8 makes it kind of a bear. I've never seen one with a rear sump pan . You would have to cut out quite a bit of firewall and tunnel to make it happen, because you'd have to set it way back in your lap due to the funky pan. Our rules won't let us move them back that far. I am one of the relatively few Buick 3.8 fans on here. I love them, but I'd sink quite a bit of effort into the 2.3 before going this route in a Foxbody. AMC Gremlin and Eagle are the only successful Buick 3.8 transplants we've had into non GM cars.....all because of the pan. One day, I will fab up a rear sump pan for my 3.8's.

very nice hellbent you took direction VERY well weld the core support back on a solid weld all the way around it and now take the bumper shock mounting hole and stick your tape measure in there to see how deep they are not go get pipe and shove in there then weld it on to the core support and then put your brackets on then your bumper. now if you follow all that you will have one amazing hard nose mustang.

Most of our shows around here are no weld, except bumper to bracket & bracket to frame. Our wheelbase limit is 105, so no w bodies. These have treated me better than any other model on the no weld tracks.....this is the last time I ran one no weld.....

This was run #3, heat #5, and win #3 for this car. With some work, it's got another heat left in it.

Anything stiff, yet lightweight. Stock, these can't handle a heavy bumper. The one on that car came right off the back of that car. The front ones aren't too bad either for a stock build. They only had steel bumpers through '86
This was a pretty clean car to start with. Here's the back after run 3

I was a little slow on the take there, sitting here, thinking wtf? But yeah, it's a nice legal way to beat on the boy ;D Got away with spousal abuse that way for a few years too. Hope to have a chance to beat up both kids Labor Day weekend
Some family pairs around here will come down to the 2/3 of them, then signal each other and quit. We don't play that way. If it comes down to us, we finish the game. The winner earned it. At our last derby, the boy got a chance to beat on the old man.

Just got done pulling the engine a trans out of a 81 stang. Car is way too rusty to derby, so the rest is going to the crusher. My question is, is the rear axle worth saving or should I just leave it for crush weight? Also, same question with the front bumper. The car had a 2.3 and a 5 speed.

The bumpers are decent for a soft build on a lightweight car, such as these. They won't handle a heavy build or a heavy car, such as Lumina, Pacer, Camaro, etc.
If the rear is a 6.75, leave it...bia but not strong and a real pita to weld. If it's a 7.5, you decide...c-clips (I keep them because I have gears for them...I've bent a few axle shafts, but no other probs), if it's an 8.8, keep it...strong, but still c-clips

Thanks C4. You gave me the info I was lookin for. I'll probably pull the bumpers. I do some soft built chain cars that they could go on. I'll look into the axle a find out which one it is and go from there.

If it has a 8 bolt cover, it's a 6.75. 7.5 & 8.8 look the same...the 8.8 is just bigger & heavier. They are both a 10 bolt cover. If the id tag is still on the cover, look at the bottom row of #'s. The first 3 are the ratio, the next 2 tell ring gear size...both without codes to break

I bought a 79 cougar for the 9" in it.
It measures 56" and the capri measures 53 1/2" so it should fit for the most part right?

Obviously, you'll have to move some mounts around. 2.5" ain't bad at all. But if it looks like it jutts out too far, Use Jeep/Eagle or Lumina wheels to offset the difference...or Celebrity type wheels if you want 14's

you dont need to notch a hatch back just leave it alone it will go up on its own .. notching is for a "NOTCH" back not a HATCH back

You don't need to notch any of them a dimple on the frame is plenty

The hatches are unpredictable w/o a lil help. I've had them go both ways.
This is the product of no hatch, no bumper and dimples (no notch). Several full and half track shots.

This car came to me without a lid. This was my first time to run one without the hatch lid. I was unsure how it was gonna turn out. Honestly, it did not seem to make a difference at all. So in the future, it think I will discard them on stock rear builds for the sake of convenience & keep it on if do a leaf job.

ya i use angle iron u can see on the drivers side. but the sheet metal ripped on pass side and fell off. i only had it welded right inside the opening. need to over lap further forwards and back on the roof. or maybe weld it on the underside of the roof

If I remember right, it was Demoboy333 on the old site that put of pics with a 4.3 in it, and there were a couple others that had put small block Chevy's in them.

If you are not shortening the car, smash them in enough to bolt or weld them to the inner fenders. If you don't, they will tear off.

Still working on building my first full weld fox body....might get started running it next year
Almost all of the competition at weld shows here will be AMC & Ford and most of the Fords will be Pintos & Mavericks

i got my 9 inch in yesterday, thats tough getting it to mate up to the foxbody. The tires stick out about an inch too far on each side w/ lumina wheels on it. So i think itll work alright.
I used the stock coils and used my front end loader to push the car way down to get the shocks and top arms bolted up.

skiprip, i see the leaf pack you have is pretty thick. Any problems with it ripping out of the frame since theres not much give with the springs? Did you do anything special mounting the rear shackle?

I think the steel bumpers on these are unpredictable. I have had them go bad in a couple runs. On the other hand, I have couple that have both been through multiple cars and are still good.

Well, I picked 1987 LX at random to look up....Trunk sedan weighs 2742, hatch weighs 2800, convert weighs 3044, so I'm gonna guess there is something extra down there.

does anyone have or know where I can get a wiring diagram to be able to take the injected 2.3 from my 89 mustang and be able to transfer from car to car. I love the way this motor runs with the injection and it would save time and money versus scrounging junk yards for intakes carb and distributor.

It will need the extra encouragement to roll up. Notch it or dimple it. I prefer to dimple. If you dimple, do it pretty deep. Tuck the trunk if you can. If you can't tuck it, throw it away.
With really stock rules, the back will be the business end of it.....depending on just how stock.

I got it ;D
Here's the best tip you will ever hear from me in this thread, as I generally have much tighter rules to work with than they do. If layedback (despite his age), skiprip, or kelbz3x offer sincere foxbody advice, take it to heart. All 3 of those guys are very capable of building exceptional foxes.
A 74-76 Monte bumper was unable to hold up to Matt's last fox build.
I'm not knockin' anyone here. Experience sharing is what this is all about.
edit.......Matt, perhaps you'd grace us with a pic or 2 of your t-bird, or the old stang, if you still have some.

OK my turn This is my 2011 summer of foxbodies. Had a few bad breaks in my drivetrain. Been awhile since that's been an Issue. I cracked a built 2.3 head broke 3 bellhousings all while using my 3 speed and slider and broke 1 9 inch axle . Rough year for me but the cars look decent. I think I got 4 5th/6th places (drivetrain issues) 1 3rd and 2 2nds on these this year. Roughest year I've had since I've been out of high school.
This is the car I started with. I ran two $1000 to win shows with it.
This is how it sets now. Doesn't look like I got hit or did any hitting...
Or does it? LOL
Then I ran this car had a little better luck but not what I had hoped for.
No Fat pedal But Here it is before run # 6. Hard Hard Hard car just rushed the back end a little too much.
Long post but picture junkies enjoy.
Side note my next mustang has limiting rules... you may not see any pictures of it.. it's gonna be just thrown together.

cut your header panel off and shorten your front up 4 inches and then cut the mouting piece of your bumper shock off and get 2 inch pip shove in your mounting hole and then weld your pipe in then your bracket on.

dont have any pictures on how to do it. its really simpel just cut your header panel at the seam top and bottom and then cut your unibody frame 4 inches back but make sure your fenders are off then weld your header panel back on

ok so i did shorten my car the other night. it wasn't bad i took a bunch of pictures so it can be shown how i did it i shortened mine 5 inches
so i cut the whole core support off
[image]
then i measured back 4 inches and marked that but also marked 2 inches also so that i could cut it off at 2 inches and the inside out a 4 inches so that the core support would slide inside the frame
[image]
then you cut the same angle all the way to the top of the dog house
[image]
then slide the core support back on and test fit it
[image]
and if you like it there weld it and it should look like this
[image]
also you can cut a little around the light whole on the core support when you get it welded back on to make a flap to weld down the inside of the dog house for extra support
it was my first time doing this. took about 3 hours cause i never done it before now i think i could do it in about half the time. my fenders are actually perfectly in line with the core support now.

how hard would it be to put my buick 3.8 in a mustang? this will probably be only if i can not get the 2.3 going..anybody ever try this?

How might one fix a hatch back to get it to go up? Or what all needs to be done? Able to do just about anything.

you dont need to notch a hatch back just leave it alone it will go up on its own .. notching is for a "NOTCH" back not a HATCH back

If I remember right, it was Demoboy333 on the old site that put of pics with a 4.3 in it, and there were a couple others that had put small block Chevy's in them.

If you are not shortening the car, smash them in enough to bolt or weld them to the inner fenders. If you don't, they will tear off.

How many runs are you guys getting out of a clean full weld stang? Thinking about trying one because they look tough and no one really runs them around here.
