Hardnose a good bumper on the front, run donuts on the rear, tuck the trunk, and take your time shifting and you will do fine...IMO

I'd add, build a metal frame for the valve cover that bolts in the same holes. Plastic tends to twist and bend causing fires when the engine runs hotter than usual.
And don't forget to put the fuel pressure regulator on the fuel line

its a hatchback, hard to tuck that....
the fuel press regulator and valve cover i would have never thought of.
i have an Aspen bumper i was thinking of sticking up front.
do these have any wiring quirks?
The plan is to set this up for my 12yo to run his first derby. trying to make it as fool proof as i can.

There is a wire loom behind the left front fender in the front that needs to be moved. The first one I ran years ago was disabled by not simply relocating wire harness.....live and learn.

Since he is 12 you should practice driving in a field with him especially taking time switching from foward to reverse because the transmissions on Korean cars are junk and must be driven carefully...JMO

very easy set up. i ran a 96 hatchback this year everything went well until the shifting forks broke in the tranny. like stromi said go easy on the tranny. the alternator wire that go from the under the hood fuse box the wire runs under the radiator it is long enough to reroute over the top of the engine. it was on my maybe 02 is different. raise the rear bumper up higher on the back and it will roll up instead of down. change it out with a different bumper the oem suck.

The alternator wire still runs under the radiator on 2nd gen. I forgot to mention another thing, if possible beef the rear suspension arms or it may end up as a 3 wheeler.

Only Hyundai I have seen run was a 90ish Excel. It was in my heat....so tore up at the end of the heat, not a single wheel was still touching the ground. It did not make it back out for the consi.

IMO 2nd gen Accents are better than 1st gen. Front is stiffer, better engine. But if you can put your hands on an Excel it's even better, easy build and good engine.
Anyways, Hyundais are great for fast builds for stock shows.

i won't be running an alternator. the one in it is junk, and i don't see the need to spend the $$ on one. Is there a way to run a different belt and still tension it so that the water pump will be working? I was tearing up the back yard the other day for over half an hour and it only ate up about half the battery life (not even my best battery)
Jull - do you have any pictures of the valve cover reinforcement you were referring to? i have been looking at it and can't picture a great way to accomplish what you are talking about.
this won't ba a fast build. i have all winter, and it will have a full cage and probably a halo bar. since it is for my boy, safety is a must.

I haven't build one. Just tought about it after a friend of mine ran one and the valve cover warped when engine got too hot, oil was spraying all over the engine compartment. Thankfully it didn't catch fire, but I think it was a close one.
Maybe it could look like this. Sorry I have bad drawing skills on paint.
