Pretty simple builds. Bumper swap, weld as much as allowed, etc. What year and model?

I figured I'd read the Honda tips on the old site when needed them. Well, now the old site is gone & we're building a '90 Accord 4 door. I found out that step one for changing transmission filter is to remove the transmission from the car....no joke.

Cover the positive stud on the alternator, remove the thermostat, hotwire the fan, run donuts, tuck and notch, change front bumper, ect.

If it quits running and you are not getting any fuel or spark....check the main relay under the steering column. These cars are notorious for eating main relays for some reason.

Yeah, It's acting like it is getting clogged. After driving it for a few days, it starts taking forever to engage....like 30-60 seconds. Once it finally engages, it stays that way. Let it sit for a few days, so the sludge can settle back down & it engages right away.
I thought it was a little odd that the new filter was a cartridge, not a flat paper or screen. Crawl under the car...no trans pan. I'm thinkin' wtf?? Did some research and sure enough, it was a short lived design that involves removing and partially disassembling the tranny. We only have 2 compact demos left this year,so we are gonna wing it & hope it slides through. If the car is still alive after that, it can be a winter project. If the car is dead, that's ok...we need the transmission to finish off a nearly dead '94. We can do it when it's out of the car anyway.

Which reminds me.........the 94 is a 5 speed. It quit being able to go into 1st or 2nd gear. The clutch felt good and all other gears worked. We smoked the clutch from starting out in 3rd gear. Any ideas on what could cause that. If I can't figure taht out, the plan is to put the '90 automatic in it.

I have an 88 Accord that's been through 2 derbies. I notched the rear frame rails, welded the trunk shut, put an '80s Mopar bumper on the front (with boxed ends), hotwired the fans, threaded rod through the hood, reinforced the upper a-arms, stuffed the front tires, ran donuts on the back, and took everything out from under the hood that wasn't necessary. Been through 2 derbies and going for #3 next weekend.

1990 accord broke the control arm. Hard to tell from this muddy photo what you are looking at. I'll have to hose it off and get a better picture so you know what I am referring to.
How do you prevent this?

Anybody ever run a prelude? They any good? There is an '88 being sold locally but if it is not worth its weight in scrap, I'm not gonna waste my time with it. Looking for some input from you guys. Do you think it will hold up as well the accords and civics?

Looking at them side by side, I believe they are virtually the same as a 2 door Accord.

On the outside yes. I just scrapped my 91 Prelude Si after 2 seasons of figure 8s and 5 derbys. A little tougher than an accord imo. Rear suspension parts are completely different and alot stronger than Accords. After all of that my rear wheels were still straight. Front suspension is about the same. Alot of parts are interchangable.
If you do get it and decide you want to sell or trade it pm me. I'll post my Prelude pics when I get them on the comp.

Thanks guys for the input. I will make them an offer and see where it ends up. I was pleased with the only civic I built this year - which was a stock derby. So if the prelude holds up as well, then it should be a good investment.

Just the main fuse in the fuse box under the hood on the firewall. Replace with a wire or the best way would be to install a circut breaker.

Thanks, STROMI. We had 4 layers of inner tube rubber over it, but it peeled off, so after a 1st and a 3rd, the Honda was a one hit wonder last night. Was hoping to trash it last night, so we wouldn't have to hold onto it over the winter, but oh well.
Will check that fuse.
I don't see a belt driven water pump. Is it internal....driven by timing gears like an Escort?
If so, we could finish it off without the alternator, yes? We've already ditched the P.S. so I don't think we'd need a belt for anything, if the water pump is gear driven.

Yes, water pump is timing belt driven. Depending on how new it is they run better with an alternator. Just fix the fuse and use a doubled up floor mat or a piece of wood as an insulator. Innertube is no way thick enough.

It's a '90 Accord, and the back of it (alternator), including whatever is mounted back there, is slightly smashed and broken. The boy took a Pacer head on & the Pacer bumper cleared his bumper.

.......OR, how difficult would it be to re-mount the alternator where the ac compressor.
And I agree with the PS opinion on MOST compacts.

I have owned 2 hondas that didn't have power steering from the factory and both were drivers. Didn't really notice a difference even on the road.
Anyone ever ran any newer Hondas? Picked up a 98 4 door Civic today. Was in a very minor accident. Didn't look it over too close yet, threw the dealer plate on and drove it home for the price. Anything different or just build it like the older ones?

I've seen a couple 99-00 Accords do very good. We had 2 96 h/b this year. They're not bad except the fact they're awfully small. I'd build it the same way I'd build an older one.

Looking for a block drain on this 90 Accord....don't want to have to spend money on antifreeze for the winter. Normally, I just drop the bottom hose and get lucky, but on this, both hoses go in at the top of the engine. The only plug I'm finding is a couple inches below the oil filter. Took it out & it just dumps oil.
Anyone know where the heck a water drain plug would be on this?

hey it should be a big allen key plug on the front of the block next to the header on the passenger side. may be behind the header depending on the setup. i always drain the hondas with the header out the way. that will drain the coolant out of the block. hope this helps.
Ok, it still has the stock exhaust going down. It might be in the way to see. We plan on building a header for it this winter, but we are expecting a hard freeze tomorrow night, so I'll go ahead & buy a jug of antifreeze for it. Guess we'll drain it next year. The car will be long dead, but I intend to use this engine in multiple cars til it pukes. Thanks for the info.

Yes, it is in the fuse box under the hood by the firewall, it is one of the larger fuses. It will leave you stranded if it blows. The fan or radiator support coming in contact with the alternator positive stud is the main cause of it blowing. Use several layers of floor mat or wood to protect it.

What will it be labeled? I seen an 80 amp marked battery?

What will it be labeled? I seen an 80 amp marked battery?
That is the one that pops when the alternator post gets grounded out.

We ditched the alternator on our '90. Seems to still run great.

Should be able to flip the header if you cut and reweld. Take a look it should be easy to tell. What are you allowed for bumpers/mounting? Rear should be ok without the hatch. Maybe run some 9 wire in a big X to hold it together and keep other cars out.

not allowed bumper swap so with that being said a honda crx hasnt ever ran at this show before so i dont think there's going to be much for them to go by if oh i dont know some extra metal was added to the bumper support and behind the support. should i keep the ac compressor in or remove it? im thinking i should take it out. and also how do the headlights come out??? i got the top two bolts in the core support but it still wont come out or is there more bolts behind the bumper support???

thats my car but my friend drove it in that derby, im to younge because i have to be 18 or older. he said the tranny was slipping some but the car blew a slit all the way dont the hose from the radiator to the motor, when he got pushed up on the wall the car died. we put it on the trailer and didnt even look under the hood. the first derby i drove it in i had a fuse blow so it wouldnt start back up.
and i ran the donut tires on the back.

has anyone ever made a dp for one of these or whats the chances of anything getting to the distributor cap?
me and two of my demo guys are trying to talk the promoter into letting compacts do bumper swaps. what bumper would you guys use on a crx?
full-size bumper option and "compact" bumper options please

im running a 70s seamwelded thunderbird bumper next year. bought two of them so i hope they are worth the money. The clean one will only be seam welded, and the other rusty one will have a homemade backing on it.
any input on these bumpers is needed.

These cars have a pretty tough nose and rear on them when built right. Cv axels are week. I need to figure out how to fix that problem for the future. Mine was a 93 or 94 accord. Hard wire the battery fuse under the hood it's the 80 amp one. Tuck your trunk but also notch the extra support about 4 to 6 inches in from the tailight panel. If anyone needs help on these cars pm me and I will help u the best I can.

As far as the dp idea goes, never done it but I have seen a Civic's bumper get cleared and the dist. get broke in half. I have never had a problem with the 4 Accords, 2 Civics, and Prelude I built but it can happen.

my bumper height was set at 24 inches from ground to top of bumper. Could of went higher but it sat good where it was. No problems with distributor but I would not run a accord not lifted because it wouldn't take much to break distributor cap off. ;D

Mines at 27 to the top and getting ran in a couple of weeks. Kind of nervous on how it will hold up. Just dimpled the rear and pre bent it. And the middle of the trunk lid is 23 inches off the ground.

It should be fine, although I prefer a tuck and notch on Hondas because they will whale tail left stock. They always go up....straight up.

Just picked up an Accord wagon today. About the only body style honda I have not ran. Anyone have ideas on the rear? Seen 2 ran but neither rear end moved. Do they go up or down once they do start to move? Fronts I have figured out just want that rear to be as tough as it can be, very clean for a New York car.

had my run in with a civic hatchback today.
had it on a trailer and the strap broke on the front going down the high way. only thing holding it on was the strap on the back, the car was hanging off the back of the trailer and was turned at about a 45 degree angle. rubbed a hole in the back donut from being drug going 65.

That was one of the few subjects I could agree with him on lol. At no point did you think to stop!?!? Maybe put the car back on the trailer? Atleast learn from your mistake and secure cars properly and carry extra straps in the future...

I don't know If I have pics of that car still or not. Don't think I have pics of either of them actually. That rusty one was suprisingly tough...3 runs with compacts, and one with trucks, vans and fullsize. Still had some life left too.

i did stop as soon as i noticed the car. we just bought new straps rated 10,000. but i guess the stitches around the hook were rated that high.

Should be secured at four corners at the lowest possible point on the suspension using adequately rated chains or straps.

91 Accord wagon. Battery light is on from idle to around 5500 or 6000 rpm then goes off above that. Bad alternator? Noticed this after it was stripped not sure if it was on before.

That is the one that pops when the alternator post gets grounded out.

Should be secured at four corners at the lowest possible point on the suspension using adequately rated chains or straps.

we usually use a chain on the front and then one on the back at opposite corners, but some one stole them when i had my mustang on the trailer in town.
the car is light so it moved on the trailer some and wasnt thinking and had the e-brake on which doesnt work hardly and it was in nuetral (4 speed). stupidd mistake
crusher as in scrapping it?

No CRUSHER is a former member who got the boot and would have had a field day with this story.

91 Accord wagon. Battery light is on from idle to around 5500 or 6000 rpm then goes off above that. Bad alternator? Noticed this after it was stripped not sure if it was on before.
