ok well lets see here. I been building mowers for years now. So if ya got any specific questions that i dont cover here, please ask and ill try to get them answered..
ok so many of you are probably gonna ask what the best mower is. Well, Shaft driven hydrostatics are pretty much the best... But many rules do not allow for them anymore because they are so strong.
Other than that any other mower is pretty much the same.
There are alot of simple tricks you can do to help ureself. Double check everything over and over b4 the derby and days prior to derbies. Since there are a few different set of rules ill just tell you what i do as general tricks.
I double hose clamp all gas lines and i use a gas shut off valve.
I will use spray on gasket maker and zip screws on all tires to help keep them on. "I personally do not like the slime or foam filled tires i don't think they help."
I also buy brand new belts no matter the condition of the one on it.
If your allowed to run a battery then i sugest making a little battery box. I would also get rid of the entire wireing system and use a simple push button start and toggle kill switch. thats all you need.
I have never used a gas pedal throttle, but im thinking about it.
"I also sugest that if u are not allowed batteries that you use stock exhaust mufflers. they help keep the engine running than when u use pipes and custome exhaust."
I hope that ure rules say u can use leg gaurds and if they dont I sugest you put them on or i wouldnt run. I have seen Idiot on youtube put his like 7 year old daughter on a mower against older women, with no leg gaurds on her mower, and the little girl could barelt shift, and hit the clutch and brake. Personally i think he needs shot, but thats my opinion. I sugest using good material for leg gaurds. If you dont feel comfortable enough to let a guy on a mower doing 35+mph and hit ure legs gaurds straight on then i sugest u beef them up. I do not sugest water pipe or small pipe just running down slightly as leg gaurds. they will not do good. So build tough leg gaurds thats what matters most. If you can run bumpers then run bumpers no matter what u make them out of. If you cant run back bumpers i have been seeing people slant their rear ends down and building leg gaurds off of that and calling it part of roll cage and useing it as bumper.
If you want to make your mower go faster then change the pully on the rear end and on the engine if you want. put a smaller pully on the rear end and bigger on the engine and that should change your speed. BUT i do not sugest making them super small in the back and huge in the front. You have to remember, these are LAWN MOWERS.. these were designed to go slow and cut ure grass, not doin 35 and smashing into each other. so the rear end and engine shaft are not strong.. If you want pushing power then weld the rear end possy and youll get alot better pushing power. But when you weld them solid you make steering alot harder. If you weld the rear end solid and change pully's you better hold on tight and be careful turning, cuz its gonna be hard to turn.
Now im gonna unleash the big seceret.. ok, So me personally i do not believe in hitting in leg gaurds, if it happens it happens.. But i personally think if u hit someone full track in the leg gaurds u should go sit on the wall and let me full track ure legs and break them cuz thats what u can do to someone if their leg gaurds arent built right... thats my opinion, cuz i ran a derby where they were slamming mine and i didnt flinch. but if u hit leg gaurds ure not damaging the mower itself ure just gonna risk hurting someone.. BACK AND FRONT TIRES! these are the weakest parts on mowers.. just hit them as hard as u can and break the front or rear axles.. thats all it takes. engines will stall, mowers will pop belts, and gears can go out, but thats what can happen on their own. almost all mower rear ends are weak, just hit them as hard as u can.. there is no rear end that wont break. and their are no front axles that wont bend.
ok so thats my little input, anyone has specific questions let me know, ill try to answer..
