Figured I would start this thread since more and more shows are weld and weld more. Maybe you have advice for a new driver who just got his first welder. Or maybe what your favorite rods are for a stick welder and certain parts of a car.

favorite welding rods for derby use is 6013 i call it "farmer rod" since it helps when welding dirty metal and partially painted surfaces. favorite wire for my 110 mig is .023 you get better penetration with smaller wire when welding thicker metals... hope this helps

I,v got a 110 wire feed flux welder with no gas works for every thing sheetmetal. Then I use my dads old faithful 220 big red lincon stick welder for bumpers and other heavyer steel.

stick welding is one of the better welding methods when it comes to thick metal.. 6010 or 6011 is a great great rod for getting deep penatration and its called pipe rod cuz its intended for oil pipes other things. i use it like crazy but it will shoot alot of spatty and is very messy. u either want to use the WHIP method or the Circle method.the whip method is where you go back and forth on where u want to weld like ure whiping it. then the circle mothion is just moving you rod in a circle motion. 6013 and 7018 are good cover rods. they are good to use to cover overtop a 6010 or 6011 weld. and its also good for just general use. But stick welding is a very very poor choice when it comes to welding the body and flooring and other such things. it burns through very very easly especially on new cars. if you have no choice, try to set it down low as possible and weld from the peach of metal ure adding and try to push the weld over to the body. For mig welders, i had a little crappy $138 from harbor frieght flux core welder that i used for years. its not good what so ever for thick stuff especially 1/4 inch and up. but its ok for 1/8 inch. good for body work. you really need to invest in a good mig welder which will be around 500-800 pending on what brand u get. Don't try to use a little flux core mig welder for your roll cage or ure frame work. you are wasting time and money.. it will break.
if your stick welder is sticking to the metal and not welding when u try to strike an arc then your amps are too low and u need to turn your dial up.. Mig welders if your wire is pushing your gun away from the metal or is acting like a machine gun as some say, then turn your wire speed down, or turn your amps up.. one or the other.. and dont run ure amps too high and wire speed too slow cuz your wire will burn back onto your tip, and u will be buying new tips..

^actually by turning up your amperage up when your stick welding your making the problem worse... try turning it down, that will increase your arc striking amps. thats a very common mistake when stick welding....

6010 6011 are not PIPE RODS. They may be used for a root pass when pipe welding but not cover passes. that would be 7018`s do to being able to contract and expand. Sorry people but if you don`t know what you are talking about don`t try to teach other`s. 75% of what i have read so far is crap.

I agree. 7018 is the best all around rod out there. If your going to be welding sheet metal i'd go with 6013 since you can kinda get away with running it down hill. As for mig welding I got a little lincoln 140 I use .035 solid wire and straight co2. If I want a nice looking weld I'll use a 75/25 mix gas. If I have thicker stuff to weld and want to use my little welder I use .035 NR-211 flux core wire. You can have the best stuff in the world but if you don't know how to weld it won't help you.

One thing to add, 7018 are only worth a shoot running dc+. So if you only have an old ac buzz box, stick to a 6011 root and a 6013 cover pass

NOT GOING TO SUGARCOAT THIS ONE. IF YOU USE .023 WIRE TO DO FRAMES, YOUR PENETRATION AND HEAT PUT INTO THE WELDS WILL NOT BE NEARLY ENOUGH. YOUR WELDS WILL BE COLD AND LOOK LIKE SOMETHING SEAGULLS LEAVE ON DOCKS...... GET IT RIGHT OR DONT POST BULLSHIT LIKE THAT...

What's your favorite rod to use when welding spider gears??? I have done it three different ways with good results each time:
1/8" 7018 1/8" 6011 .030 mig weld
