Well the 2.3 stock is one badazz motor, just make sure you are using a carburated version and not the queered up 8 plug head version. I buy all of my 2.3 performance parts from speedway motors. Their website is www.speedwaymotors.com hope this helps

you can get the rebuild kit from northernautoparts.com.
Mainly Id go .30 over, medium cam, mill the head some down .30 or .40 thousands and maybe some port work.

The majority of power in a 2.3 comes from the head. Port it out, do a valve, get a good cam. These bottom ends are bullet proof. I know many mini stock racers that turn 10 grand all night with stock bottom ends. I would just bore it out some to keep it from gettin tight when you get hot.

I run auto's a C4 with a shift kit and heavier clutches. Alot of people like manual though the biggest thing is get some gears for your rearend. Lowest I have found for a 7.5 is 4.56 gears.

I've heard that the roller cam out that junk 8 plug ranger head works really well in a carbed motor. I run an auto trans C-3 with a big trans cooler that holds 20lbs of ice, with a 3.73 rear gear.

I've got mine all setup and two more in the shop that will be done this weekend. I'm stuck outta town for work all week or I'd do them tonight. Any suggestions on gears while runnin a three speed two are trucks and one is out of a comet. I have an idea of what I want but thought I'd ask what some of you are running.

Re: How to build a 2.3?

go 4.62's w/ an 8 inch. first gear is pretty high in the 3 speeds.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Re: How to build a 2.3?
Post by SkipRip on Feb 9th, 2009, 5:18pm
Yeah it was between that and 4.88's I've ran them in the past with a four speed. What do you think about 8.8's compared to the 8"s I've got tons of 8.8's and the last 8" we ran got broke before my 7.5". I'm thinking of just taking a spare rearend with me everywhere they are easy to change. I will have to be creative with bracing but I think I can make it work.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Re: How to build a 2.3?
Post by ballsdeep08 on Feb 9th, 2009, 9:11pm
we have a set-up as low as 5.37s but i do like the 4.62s our deep setup is fun tho i had it im my pacer last year...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Re: How to build a 2.3?
Post by hvyeqop69 on Feb 9th, 2009, 10:04pm
ive never tried the 8.8 but ive seen them break too.
Ive only ever broke one 8" rear on asphalt.
I used a 8 3/4 there last time w/ 4.88's and it didnt break.
I might bring a spare too this time. Not that we will have enough time to change one though.

I figured this out about 10 years ago. All you need to do is get a bell housing, clutch fork, thick (2") flywheel with pressure plate out of a mustang II. 10 tooth clutch for the three speed. For $30.00 I can get you a pilot bearing that will fit in the flywheel.

trade it for a holley 2 barrell.
get a good cam, lil port work, and mill it down .20 to .40
thousandths. double valve springs, strap the towers if you bottom end is overbuilt also. bigger valves too but not necessary.

Work on the heads, and don't run an auto unless you have a decent cam and a geared rear-end.

Re: How to build a 2.3!

A medium cam with a geared rear-end is best. 2.3's need to see some RPMs before they start showing some power. You obviously don't want a radical cam due to not having the power band in the first 4,000 RPM range(derbies is all about acceleration).

I have never had a single problem with the T-5 5 speed tranny--derby, street, strip. Every bit as good of tanny as the C4 imao. Never tried a 3 speed, but i will if my T-5 ever takes a shoot.
AS for the guy in the 2nd post i sure hope ur making over 150hp with all that you listed was being done to that thing. U also wont be turning 10grand for long if u are running the stock crank--balanced or not.
2.3 engines dont like revs much past 8500....now a built 2.0 will turn 10grand all night long even with the stock crank.
recipe for 2.3 success is stock bottom end--if u r on a budget, Holly 2bbl, efi lower half, port and big valves, use a D-port head if u can find one. Now comes the biggest part of the motor--the cam. If u are gonna run an auto get a moderate to medium cam, manual get a moderate to larger cam.
Whatever u do dont shave too much off your head. I would never run domed pistons.

well i dunno, ive never had a problem with the mustang stick shift trannys, I know a guy who has been running the 4spds outta "certain year" mustangs for 20 years and hes only lost one and that was due to the clutch letting go. Maybe some of you are grinding gears too much or something. I dunno. And I aint gunna hassel around with all the home made parts to put a 3 speed in it, I have a c4 auto that a guy had ran in a foxbody I could try i guess.

And I aint gunna hassel around with all the home made parts to put a 3 speed in it, I have a c4 auto that a guy had ran in a foxbody I could try i guess.
I never had any problems either until we put a stroker motor that put out near 300 horses at 2850 cc's in our ministock mustang. Shattered a bunch of vital tranny parts. LOL Then had to spend some money further down the drivetrain.

It doesnt require alot of homeade parts for a 3 speed. The only thing you have to have made is a pilot bearing.

it does... it runs up to the check valve... it just keeps the motor cooler by sucking all the heat out of the top... you gotta run the check valve to stop it from sucking oil out....

I like to stick to .020 over with JE forged pistons
I believe Esslinger makes a bored and stroked 2.3 that ends up being a 3.1L....but it does require an SVO tall deck block.

the best thing to help with heat. is good fuel and slowing your water down... i run under/over drive pullies on my crank and waterpump.. but you can also put a washer 5/8s if i remember right. in place of your thermostat.. in the housing.. it will slow the water down and give it more time to cool in your radiator..

you will need an intake off of 83,84.85,carbed mustang or ranger tou can pick one of them up at a junkyard they shouldn't be too expensive you will need a motorcraft two barrel carb they came on anything made by ford in the 70s and you will need a points dist. for
