Just bought an Electric Golf cart the other day, and am wanting to put an engine on it. Thought about trying to go cheap and just putting a single cylinder horizontal shaft engine on it, but that would be under powered and too slow for me. So i thought about buying a motorcycle engine and transmission. Now that im looking up the parts to do the swap, it looks like all in all it will cost about the same if i can find a good engine from a motorcycle that runs. Now my question is... has anyone on this site done this before? im curious as to how the transmission will hook up to the rear end.. would i take the stock "differential" off and weld a sprocket on it and run a chain? i plan on reinforcing the frame to handle the added power and welding a cage on for safety, but rigging up the clutch, shifter, and how to get it to drive is a mystery to me. As for the shifter, i would like to have a stick. any input or ideas here would be great.

i would think the chain drive would be a cheep way to go and the shifter would be easy if you weld a tab to the stock foot shifter and point it down you should be able to pull the lever back to shift gears up if your pivit point is in the middle

a kid on highlifter put a honda bigred250 engine/rear end under his gold cart back in the day. he pretty much just cut the atc off at the triples and fabbed it into his existing golfcart chassis

Ok, so here is what I know about the cart...Sorry about the delay on info, but i sorta forgot about this thread....Its a 93 E-Z-Go, was electric, and has a rear end like that of a car....as in there is a diff and all. the shaft has 11 groves in it (11 spline? sorry im axle retarded) I junked the Idea of the single cylinder engine, and right now im working on getting a motorcycle engine. the one im planning on buying is a Kawasaki 400 engine from a 70's-80's bike. now, since the rear end is like a mini car rear, how should I go about this? position the engine sideways? or make a whole new rear? Lol, the stock rear has 12 bolts in the cover....was told its got some pretty low gears, but im not sure.

not sure if it would even hold up to a 400cc engine..... personally id get some heavier walled square or dom and build a 4link setup around a pair(or two) of pillow blocks and run a gocart axle with a set of adjustable atv style shocks. wouldnt bee too much trouble and you can always make it the width/stretch that you want/need it. a stick of decent walled dom tubing is around $50-$60, i did as couple searches in less than 5mins on ebay that brought up hubs/axle/sprocket&hub all for less than $200. or dig around on craigslist and find maybe a $100 complete go cart for part and if youre lucky you can find one with the mechanical lever disc brake setup and splined/keyed axle that is cake to set up posi/freewheel and is adjustable throughout the length of the entire axle
