Anything from a 5.00 to 6.00 ratio.

I run 4:88 and don't have any issues. You don't want to go to high especially if you have muddy tracks where you run because then you will be creating more heat.

depends on the build of that 283. i'm thinking it's mostly stock, right? if so stay in the 4's meaning 4.11-4.88 range. takes a lot of RPM'S to turn those 5.13's and so on

Yes like Dave said I would stay out of the 5's and defiantly stay out of the 6's. We have found that the new style fords like the high 4's the most because they don't weigh enough to keep traction.

I recomend 4.88 or 5.00 you wont really be able to tell a noticeable difference. I have 5.43s now and I like them. With that small cubic inch and short stroke low end power will be pretty much non existant dont plan on pushing anyone around with a 283 and 4.10s.

But really it's personal preference.

283's (stock) are short stroke, small piston engines. They suck at low rpm's. Th-400's take a bit of torque to turn the pump. Can you find a th-350? Maybe a higher stall torque convertor too.

that size motor 4.88 or 4.56. I run a 5.37 behind my 383 but I also can turn my motor up to 8500. I run that gear mainly to keep my motor in the best power range for my cam and engine build.
